"A Lesson in Home Buying Assistance"
by Ronald E. Roel
"...[observing] a couple [with attorney Jaime Marcos of Marcos Negron Akaike LLP] preparing to close on a mortgage for their first home in Bay Shore...the occasion was the participation of the region's first school district in the employer-assisted housing program created by the Long Island Home Works Partnership...I wanted to see this transaction up close.  For one thing, it involved a school district, not a private employer, so there were some additional wrinkles, using public money for such purposes.  I also wanted to get a better feel for how much effort -- and how many people -- were needed to complete just one such affordable-housing project...I sat down with [the couple]...the keys to his new house was in his pocket and I asked him how fe felt.  He smiled, and said quietly:  'i wanted to purchase a house all my life...and finally the day has come.'"
