U.S. Immigration

The immigration process allows for many types of visas, including family-based and employment-based visas.  Within each type, there is a nonimmigrant/temporary visa and immigrant/permanent ("green card") visas.  Many individuals first obtain a family- or employment-based nonimmigrant visa, then seek the immigrant/permanent ("green card") visa.

Whether family- or employment-based, nonimmigrant visas allow an individual to reside, go to school, visit, or work in the United States temporarily.  Immigrant/permanent ("green card") visas allow an individual to do the same, on a permanent basis.  After becoming an immigrant, an individual may seek to become a U.S. Citizen.
